BURBANK, CA-The number of new permits issued for apartments and the dollar volume of construction dipped in Los Angeles County during the first seven months of this year, as did the volume of commercial building construction, according to newly released figures from the non-profit Construction Industry Research Board.

The board, which is based in Burbank, says 4,848 new multifamily permits were issued in Los Angeles County through the end of July, down from 6,087 in the first half of 2001. The aggregate value of the multifamily permits was $499.2 million, down from $652.5 million at the same time a year ago.

In the commercial and industrial categories, the board’s report does not list the number of permits, but it says the volume of construction dropped to $1.7 billion for the first seven months of this year, compared with $2.22 billion last year. The figures include offices, retail stores, hotels, motels, warehouses, manufacturing facilities and other commercial and industrial buildings, as well as additions and alterations to commercial properties.
