CLARK, NJ-After three years of construction, the Hyatt Hills golf complex has opened on the border between this city and adjacent Cranford. What makes the complex especially interesting is that is was built and is owned by General Motors, marking the automaker’s initial incursion into golf courses.

By way of history, the 87-acre site once housed GM’s Hyatt Ball Bearing division, which it closed and sold to a group of former employees more than 20 years ago. The subsequent company failed in 1987 and the site reverted to GM ownership two years later. Prior to construction of the golf complex, the site had stood unused for some 15 years.

Hyatt Hills consists of a nine-hole golf course, along with a driving range, a pair of miniature golf courses and a clubhouse. While owned by GM, the facility will be operated as a public venue by a golf course commission representing both Clark and Cranford.

Hyatt Hills also represents a brownfields reclamation project. As part of its agreement with the NJ DEP, GM will monitor the site’s groundwater on an ongoing basis.
