FREETOWN, MA-The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. plans to build a new distribution center on a 151-acre parcel off South Main Street. A spokesperson for the supermarket chain tells GlobeSt.com that the company has not made a determination yet about the fate of the company’s facility in Readville.

The plan involves two warehouse and distribution buildings totaling 1.3-million sf. The dry goods warehouse will total 619,000 sf and the perishables warehouse will total 700,000 sf. The site is zoned industrial and is part of the former FreetownEnergy Park, a synthetic gas plant that produced methane from naphthafrom 1973 to 1986.

The project also includes 75,000 sf of office space, a 15,000-sf maintenance building, trailer storage, 1,100 parking spaces, loading areas, fuel islands, truck trailer wash bays, landscaped areas, and storm water management areas.

The project’s estimated assessed value is approximately $45 million. As part of the project, Stop & Shop will design and construct a number of road improvements at the Route 24/South Main Street interchange, subject to Massachusetts Highway Department approval.

Stop & Shop says it is also working closely with the town to design plans for widening a portion of South Main Street, and the company says it will pay for the work.

The Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic DevelopmentDistrict has identified the site as a Priority Development Area. In return for project benefits listed above, Stop & Shop has requested a Tax Increment Financing agreement with the town.
