MAYVILLE, MI-A fund-raiser begins tonight to expand the Fowler Center, a disabled-friendly campground. The center is holding its 12th annual fundraising dinner at the Centerpoint Marriott in Pontiac, MI.

Center officials want to raise up to $5 million to build a new activities center and remodel a few facilities, and $5 more million for construction needs in the next 15 years. The activities center would cost $2 million to build, officials say.

The money could be raised by various sources, officials say, including more than $4 million through local organizations and individuals, more than $2 million through business gifts and $180,000 through a Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant.

“We need to expand the facilities at the center,” says board president Dick Johns. “We’re taking care of 4,000 disabled people, from all over the country, through the all-year camp. We desperately need better facilities.”
