MV ARCADIA-Former independent MP and BBC foreign correspondent Martin Bell predicts that the “golden age” of economic stability will be overturned by world affairs and he warns that the property professionis not ready for it.

Making the keynote speech at the Property Forum and wearing his trademark white suit, he said that we should enjoy the golden age as long as it lasts–but it will not last forever. He added that the events of 11 September were a pointer to the effect of international warlords on the UK economy.

“If we leave the world around us alone, it won’t leave us alone. That’s one of the lessons of 11 September,” he said.

Some 150 occupiers from 134 companies embarked the MV Arcadia at Southampton for three days of meetings and conference sessions. They were joined by 62 executives from 35 service provider companies. The occupiers were almost evenly split across sectors, with 18% of them from retailers and 17% from financial services and investment the two biggest sectors on board.

In a wide-ranging speech, Bell hit out at dumbed-down Britain and America. “I’m not sure that the conscience of the nation is out there ready to be moved any more,” he said.”We might go to war with Iraq and not know why.”

Other subjects Bell criticised were media magnate Rupert Murdoch, Britain’s role in the upcoming Gulf War, lobby journalists, Keith Vaz MP, public funding for political parties and BBC News.
