DENVER-It was like no other building Mayor Wellington E. Webb had ever dedicated. Webb, Denver’s first African-American mayor, dedicated the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building, where about 2,000 city employees will work.

The move by 40 departments into the 700,000-sf, 12-story building will take place over weekends over the next two months.

The building is comprised of 3,510 tons of structural steel, almost 60,000 sf of granite and 21,000 sf of limestone.

Plans for the building began in late 1999. It cost $132.4 million to build. Mile High Development created a non-profit to own the building. The city will pay $200 million in rent to the new group over the next 25 years, and then ownership will revert to the city.

RNL Design and David Tryba Architects designed the building.

In 1991, the city council enacted an ordinance prohibiting current office holders from having buildings named after them. This summer, after emotional testimony and testimonials, the law was changed to allow the city to name the building after Webb.
