EAGLE ROCK, CA–Construction has begun on a new physical, earth and environmental science center at the Occidental College campus, a project of Matt Construction of Santa Fe Springs, Calif.

The new center is a $16 million, 41,000-sf, three-story building on the south side of the Occidental campus at 1600 Campus Road. The building is scheduled for completion in October 2003 and the school will remain open during the construction period.

The project will include 23 research and teaching labs, 15 faculty and staff offices, three fully wired seminar rooms, a lobby and public work spaces at Occidental, a 115-year-old college of liberal arts and sciences with an 1,800-member student body.

Designed by Los Angeles architect Anshen + Allen, the building will match the stucco and clay-tile roof style of the existing campus. Matt Construction Project Manager Stephen Montoya says the buildings will require additional mechanical, electrical and plumbing needed for the lab areas, as well as increased natural gas feeds and water for the science areas.

Matt Construction builds projects ranging from renovations and seismic upgrades to institutional buildings, schools, offices, hotels, entertainment facilities, retail stores, restaurants and industrial complexes.
