SAN DIEGO, CA-The transformation of San Diego’s formal Naval Training Center into the mixed-use project Liberty Station has begun in earnest, as ground is broken on the first two of seven office complexes.

The two complexes are the first phase of the Office District at Liberty Station, which is expected to be ready for occupancy by mid-2003. Additional phases will be spread over several years with the Office District slated to consist of seven complexes encompassing a total of 380,000 sf at final build-out. All of the facilities in the 22-acre Office District will emulate the barracks across Lawrence Court in both design and building materials. They will feature cast stone details, balconies, arcades and clay tile roofs. Interior features will include energy efficient mechanical systems and controls, as well as ten-foot ceilings and triple-redundant fiber optic cable connections. The entire Office District project will cost $62 million to construct, including the price of land. It is being developed by McMillin Commercial, a Corky McMillin Co., designed by KMA and built by Bycor.

The Office District is one major component of the 361-acre Liberty Station waterfront community. Aside from the Office District, design plans call for 125 acres of parks and open space, shopping villages and restaurants, a 28-acre civic, arts and cultural district, two hotels, 349 single and multifamily homes and a 22-acre educational campus.
