SHERBORN, MA-A developer’s plan to take a valuable piece of real estate in the center of town at 19 and 23 North Main St. and build a 12,000-sf retail and office building has been going nowhere for so long that town officials are threatening to seize the half-acre parcel.

Developer Paul Puopolo bought the land over eight years ago for about $80,000, according to local published reports, but the property is probably worth eight times that amount now. On the site are currently an abandoned gas station and an abandoned market. A representative from the town’s building department tells GlobeSt.com that the Weston, MA-based developer started the process at that time and was supposed to have started demolition on the project last week. Because he didn’t, the special permits that were given for the building expired.

The representative points out that the town has very little office space and it worked “very hard” to ensure that this site would be developed. He says that if the town can demonstrate that it has a use for the property it is legally allowed to take it by eminent domain and pay the owner fair market value.
