DETROIT-Hutzel Women’s Hospital is moving two blocks over to John R. into the current Harper University Hospital, at a cost of $35 million for the renovation. The newly created hospital will be located in parent company Detroit MedicalCenter’s central campus, near Harper University Hospital,Karmanos Cancer Institute and Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

The hospital will feature 123 adult beds and 72 neonatal intensive care and intermediate beds. Hutzel will continue the tradition of caring for the special needs of women, which began more than 130 years ago.

Hutzel will occupy 170,000 sf within the current Harper University Hospital. The square footage of women’s services within the current Hutzel Hospital is 165,000 sf. The patient care and ancillary areas being modified forHutzel span three floors.

Demolition began at the same time the architectural drawing began. This was done to allow Hutzel to move into its new home within just nine months.

The 150,000 sf of the front plaza will undergo a complete facelift allowing for separate new lobbies for both Harper University and Hutzel Women’s Hospitals. Hutzel patients will also have specially designated elevators to their floors.

The new facility area was designed by Gunn Levine Associates, and built by Turner Construction and White Construction.
