SAN BRUNO, CA-The developer of the Shops at Tanforan says formal construction drawings and other documents have been submitted to the City Of San Bruno that will enable redevelopment of the shopping, dining and entertainment center.

“When the city approves these detailed drawings of the center’s redevelopment and the other documents, we will be fully approved to begin the construction process which will transform the existing center into The Shops at Tanforan,” says Greg Wattson, senior vice president of Wattson Breevast.

According to Wattson, the company is scheduled to break ground on the redevelopment project in February and to re-open in 2004. Its anchor stores, Sears, Target and JC Penney, will remain open throughout the entire redevelopment process.

The $105 million redevelopment project will give the existing shopping center a facelift, and add a new state-of-the-art cinema complex and a variety of restaurants. The redevelopment will add 331,000-sf of retail space and a stadium-seating multiplex, bringing the size of the center to 1.64-million sf. The center now has only a 50% occupancy rate, but developers believe the renovation will attract new tenants.

“To help assure that the revitalization project starts on time and the center re-opens on schedule, the City of San Bruno will expedite the review of the building permit applications,” says George Foscardo, community development director for the City of San Bruno. “City officials, local residents and shopping patrons all anticipate that the new Shops at Tanforan will increase the variety of retail opportunities, provide more high-quality restaurants and offer new entertainment choices for this vital economic center.”
