ELK GROVE, CA-The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors is considering a proposal that will rezone a portion of the 800-acre Laguna West Master planned community, making room for more housing at the expense of office and industrial.

In its 1993 general plan, the city set aside 20% of the Laguna West property, which amounts to 50 acres, for business and commercial use. If the city approves a multimillion-dollar housing proposal by landowner Sierra Holdings, 27 of these acres, located near Elk Grove Boulevard and Interstate 5, will be rezoned for residential use.

Laguna West residents oppose this idea, saying that, with all housing and no jobs, they are forced to drive to other cities for work, shopping and any commercial facilities.

Laguna West is currently made up mostly of residential projects. Residents say that without more commercial use, this project will never truly be a master planned community, as it will lack offices, stores and restaurants.
