WYTHEVILLE, VA-The Pepsi Bottling Group Inc. has decided to build a 300,000-sf bottling facility in Wythe County, allowing it to consolidate plants in nearby Princeton, WV, and Marion, VA, and to create 200 new jobs in the process. Pepsi, which chose Virginia over West Virginia as the location for the new project, will spend $65 million to develop the plant. A timeline for the construction has not yet been released.

“We have already identified and purchased the piece of property that we are going to be constructing this facility on,” Pepsi’s Kelly McAndrew shares with GlobeSt.com. “It is in an industrial park near the intersection of I-460 and I-77. McAndrew did not specify the name of the park, but there are 13 industrial parks in Wythe County, all of which have the available contiguous acreage Pepsi would need for such a development. “So that has already been purchased,” she continues, “and in fact, we are already beginning some site work on that piece of property.” The plant will be modeled on other similar Pepsi plants, and an architect who has worked with Pepsi on such projects in the past will design it. As for a development team, McAndrew notes, “we do have some contractors already secured.

The new facility will be an economic boon to the area. The Pepsi Bottling Group has operations all over the US and abroad, making its business accountable for over 60% of Pepsi-Cola beverage sales in North America and 40% worldwide. “Pepsi’s decision to locate a bottling facility in the Commonwealth attests to our positive business climate,” says Governor Mark R. Warner. “The company will benefit from this strategic Southwest Virginia location at the crossroads of I-77 and I-81.”
