DETROIT-DaimlerChrysler, one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers, is mulling plans to build a new plant near the city. Guy Snyder of the Great Lakes Construction Alliance in Detroit says DaimlerChrysler’s plans are for a new plant to manufacture automobile engines designed in partnership with Hyundai Motor Co. of South Korea and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. of Japan.

DaimlerChrysler anticipates to finalize a purchase of 43 % in the commercial vehicle business of Mitsubishi Motors, plus 50 % in Hyundai Motors’ commercial vehicle business, by 2003.

DCX reportedly would like to break ground on a site in either Michigan or Ohio that is near its existing operations, Snyder says.

The plant is to be designed to manufacture over 500,000 four –cylinder, 1.8- to 2.4-liter engines per year. However, Snyder says procedures still need to be worked out on how to combine production of the engines at one spot that would supply the US-based final automotive assembly plants of all three companies.

“A location in the Detroit area or Ohio becomes obvious if you’re going to make a decision based on logistics,” Snyder says. “After all, it’s where the action is.”
