AUSTIN-Three sites on the west side of the CBD are on the General Services Administration’s list for the possible location of a new federal courthouse. The GSA is now gathering information about the sites, such as how serious Whole Foods Markets Inc. is about building a new store and corporate headquarters on one of the tracts.

The Whole Foods’ parcel is between Fifth and Sixth streets and Lamar Boulevard and Bowie Street. Also on the list is the Intel building site at Nueces and Fifth streets. The third site is the block bounded by Fifth and Sixth streets and Rio Grande and San Antonio streets. Several businesses sit on that block, including the Hoffbrau restaurant.

This is the second list developed by the GSA. The first included the current site of the Austin Children’s Museum and the proposed site of the Austin Art Museum. Those were crossed off after the community protested.

The GSA’s Leonard Murphy tells GlobeSt.com that any of the new sites would be a good spot for new 195,000-sf courthouse. The current courthouse is being replaced because it is too small.

Murphy says the GSA has been unable to contact Whole Foods about the seriousness of its project. If the natural foods grocery company has solid plans for the site, the government probably would drop it from the list, he says. “We understand the importance of that kind of development and we want to be good neighbors.” Austin-based Schlosser Development, which owns the Whole Foods site and is developing the project, has not returned GlobeSt.com calls about its status.

Murphy confirms the GSA has had conversations with the representatives of the site for the unfinished Intel building. He says the selection should be wrapped up by March.
