BOSTON-The Boston Redevelopment Authority approved the development of a 14-story, 586-bed dormitory at 144-156 Boylston St. The building is part of Emerson College’s institutional master plan that involves consolidating its campus in the Midtown Cultural District.

“This is the last piece of the puzzle,” David Rosen, a spokesperson for the communication and performing arts college, tells GlobeSt.com referring to the college’s consolidation plan, which involves relocating its sites in the Back Bay and Beacon Hill to this area. Other pieces of this project include redeveloping 120 Boylston, renovating the Majestic Theater and building an11-story building behind the theater.

Rosen notes that the first two floors of the dorm building will feature student service centers. A tournament-sized basketball court will be built below ground level. Upon this project’s completion, Emerson will be able to house 47% of its undergraduate students, which are currently 2,826 people.

Rosen says that it is unclear when construction on the building will start. The project still needs approval from the city’s zoning board of appeals. The other three projects are due to be completed by this coming September.
