BOSTON-Metropolitan Meats, a meat packing plant, has opened in the New Boston Food Market, a 28-acre industrial site near the Southeast Expressway in South Boston. The new location enables Metropolitan Meat to consolidate its three locations and provide the company with room for growth.

The company’s relocation is part of the city’s Back Street Initiative that city Mayor Thomas M. Menino introduced last November. The program is an effort to keep small and mid-sized light industrial and commercial companies in the city by providing them with access to funding and connect them with workforce development tools. Citizens Bank provided the funding for the new plant.

Metropolitan Meat joins the New Boston Food Market as a 4% owner of the New Boston Food Market cooperative, the 24-company association of New Boston Food Market businesses. “Through the Back Streets program, BRA staff is working with the New Boston Food Market cooperative regarding their future expansion plans so that we can continue to bring more companies like Metropolitan Meat to this productive industrial area,” says BRA director Mark Maloney.

The combined annual revenue from the New Boston Food Market is approximately $450 million. Metropolitan Meat’s plant will employ 29 people.
