LONDON-Bristol City Council has given planning consent for the redevelopment of the Quakers Friars site in the city centre, which forms a key part of the wider Brioadmead regeneration project being promoted by the Bristol Alliance, a consortium of land Securities; Hammerson; Henderson Global Investors and Morley Fund Management.

The Quakers Friars area is the site of the former Dominican Friary dating back to the early 13th century and now comprises a collection of historic buildings that are set to become the focal point for the area’s regeneration. Bristol architectural practice, Alec French Partnership, has designed a new square facing the historic buildings featuring 218 apartments, 30 shops and a range of restaurants and cafes.

A residential landmark tower is proposed at the south east of the scheme close to the existing 22-storey Castlemead building. A new curved pedestrian street will create a link from the Quakers Friars area to the existing Galleries shopping mall in one direction and to the planned department store on Bond Street in the other direction.

Bob De Barr, Development Director for Bristol Alliance, said: “. The Alliance’ plans for Bristol will create a city centre destination to rival Leeds, Newcastle and Glasgow and we anticipate great interest from a wide range of national and international retailers.”
