CANTON, TX-A North Texas business that went from hawking wares at craft shows to full-fledged production will relocate the headquarters from the fast-growing Frisco to the more subdued town of Canton. The move into a retrofitted 22,000-sf building on 22 acres is a prelude to a 105,000-sf building project that will break ground this year.

Homemade Gourmet, a manufacturer of dry-mix food products, ramped up production on the site awhile back, but now is ready to start boxing for the mid-June move of the administrative team. Dallas-based WorkPlaceUSA started crafting the plan six months ago, from the retooling of 22,000-sf existing building design to the move plus is contracted to steer the upcoming development.

WorkPlaceUSA’s senior project director Don Altwein tells GlobeSt.com that the plan is to deliver an 80,000-sf manufacturing facility and 25,000-sf office building in 2004. Harrison Walker & Harper LP, a general contractor from Paris, TX, did the retooling and will be building the balance. WorkPlaceUSA is handling the design, but the focus has been on the move so the renderings and construction scheduled have yet to be finalized, Altwein says.

Homemade Gourmet’s move takes it 60 miles east of Dallas from the region’s fastest growing populace north of the city. The corporate is exiting about 10,000 sf in a vintage building in the suburb’s downtown.

Founded in 1997, Homemade Gourmet has evolved into a wholesale distribution network of the dry mix products that were created by a homemaker, Tami VanHoy, looking for extra cash for the family. As the demand grew so did the company, with the firm now employing about 100 workers at the Canton manufacturing site.
