SAN DIEGO-With its diverse job base and strong economy, San Diego County continues to enjoy an unemployment level significantly lower than the statewide average.

According to a report released earlier this month by the State of California Employment Development Department, the county’s April 2003 unemployment rate stood at 4.2%, more than two percentage points below the statewide average of 6.6% for the same month. In addition, the figure reflects a slight decline from March of this year, when San Diego’s unemployment level was recorded as 4.4%.

The county did, however, drop from its March ranking of number four statewide to number five in April. Four other regions in California – San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Marin and Orange counties – have lower levels of unemployment than San Diego.

According to the EDD, San Diego’s April labor force consisted of 1,484,500 people. Out of that labor force, 1,422,000 workers were employed while 62,500 others were out of work.
