DETROIT-Two formerly contaminated sites in the metro Detroit area will be reborn as retail and mixed-use properties. One, in the city of Detroit, involves a six-acre parcel area at the cornerof 7 Mile and Gratiot on the city’s east side that will be redeveloped toincrease needed retail space in the area. The long blighted property has ahistory of commercial uses including a filling station, auto repair shop,auto salvage yard, and office space.

This project will include the demolition of existing structures tomake way for the construction of 36,000 sf of retail space adjacentto an existing Kroger grocery store. The development received approval tocapture up to $517,500 in state and local taxes to be used for demolitionand site preparation activities.

A mixed-use development is planned for a blighted six-block parcelof property on Salliotte Avenue in Ecorse, MI. The development will include 56townhouse units, a full-service childcare center and a neighborhood-scaleretail center. The project received approval to capture up to $408,766 instate and local taxes to be used to demolish buildings and rebuildstreetscape infrastructure to make way for the redevelopment.
