DETROIT-The Borders Group, a large bookstore chain based out of Ann Arbor, hasconfirmed it is negotiating to take about 8,000-sf in the new Compuwarebuilding in the multimillion dollar Campus Martius Project in downtownDetroit.Campus Martius, the 7-block, 2 million square foot project at the center ofthe Necklace District downtown, is now under construction, with Compuware asthe largest tenant. The building is expected to open this year.

Emily Swan, spokeswoman for Borders, told GlobeSt.com that if a deal isreached, Borders could open a store at the project by Christmas. She said it’s company police to not comment on a settling deal.

“We are negotiating with Compuware for the space,” Swan said. “We’re veryclose to a signed lease.”There are no other Borders in Detroit; most of the company’s stores arelocated in the suburbs to the north and west of the city. Swan said thecompany has been looking to move into the city for some time, but had notfound a suitable site.

“If you look at different things going on downtown with Campus Martius, wethink there will be enough retail tenant traffic to keep a store viable,”she said.

The discussions have been going on for some time to locate at Compuware, butnothing had been confirmed until just recently. The area is bustling with new interest, though Compuware is still the onlymajor tenant to take space in the project, which is to include five newoffice buildings and more retail space. The Hard Rock Cafe recentlyannounced plans to move into the Compuware building as well.

Swan said her company has opened 35 stores this year around the country. The company employs 32,000 people worldwide and operates over 410 Bordersdomestic superstores; 33 international Borders stores located primarilyin the U.K. and the Pacific Rim; and 37 Books etc. stores throughout GreatBritain.
