LONDON-Developer London Town has successfully overturned a planning decision refusing consent for a tower next to the Tate Modern in central London.

Southwark council last October rejected proposals for a mixed-use 32-storey tower next to the landmark art gallery despite support from English Heritage, CABE, the Greater London Assembly and council planning officers for the development.

Now revised proposals for a smaller tower of only 20 storeys and comprising 90,750 sf have secured the go ahead. The residential element of the development at 44-47 Hopton St, SE1, will consist of 28 homes.

London Town Development director, Peter Harris, said: “It was always our aim that the building deliver real public benefits at the same time as being a viable business proposition for London Town. This building will look fantastic in the setting of the Millennium Bridge and Tate Modern.”
