ARCADIA, CA-Westfield Shoppingtown Santa Anita has started a $100-million renovation and expansion of the near 1.1-million-sf Santa Anita mall, a super-regional footprint that’s adding 250,000 sf of new restaurants, entertainment and retail space.

The expansion will occupy the entire northeast corner of the 29-year-old mall. The new space will be added at a site between Robinsons-May and JCPenney. Work has just begun on the project and is expected to be completed in fall 2004, according to David Doll, Westfield’s senior executive vice president of development. The project has been designed and is being built by Westfield’s in-house architectural and general contracting staffs.

The Westfield property, one of the largest in the San Gabriel Valley, will add a 16-screen AMC Theatre, totaling 74,000 sf as part of the 250,000-sf expansion along with a 42,000-sf Sport Chalet and 24,000-sf Borders Books. The remainder will provide space for a new food court with 12 eateries, 30 additional specialty stores, new sit-down restaurants and 970 extra parking spaces in two parking structures. One facility will sit directly south of Robinsons-May and include a bridge to its second level. The other will take up the northeast corner of the project site, just east of JCPenney. The mall’s existing food court will remain, but will be remodeled.

Westfield Shoppingtown Santa Anita is just south of the 210 Freeway and adjacent to the Santa Anita racetrack at the intersection of Baldwin Avenue and Huntington Drive. It is owned by Australia’s publicly held Westfield America Trust. Westfield America’s US operation, based in West Los Angeles, has a portfolio of 63 shopping centers, three power centers and 12 separate department store properties. The centers comprise 64 million sf of leasable space in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Washington.
