DETROIT-Sixty-four new rental townhouses, built by the nonprofit communitydevelopment corporation U-SNAP-BAC in Detroit’s eastside neighborhood, arenow available to occupancy by low to moderate-income families.

The company spent $10 million to build the attached apartments calledWayburn Townhouses on Wayburn Street between Mack Avenue and Lozier Street.The project includes two-story two, three and four-bedroom units, adjacentand complimentary to the new Morningside Commons, consisting of 40 single-family homes.

The corporation’s goal is to revitalize the city’s eastside from Cadieux onthe east, Van Dyke on the west, Morang on the north and Charlevoix to thesouth. Resident involvement and empowerment (through programs such ashomeownership training that gives families lifetime skills) are twocornerstones of its services.

U-SNAP-BAC is one of over 30 non-profits supported by Detroit LocalInitiatives Support Corp. in its ‘FROM THE GROUND UP’ initiative, athree-year campaign to raise $26 million to revitalize the city’sneighborhoods.

“We are adding rental housing to our growing number of housing options. Thetownhouses represent a new opportunity to families wanting the option ofhomeownership in our Morningside Commons community,” said Linda Smith,executive director of USNAP-BAC.
