CHICAGO-A 6,060-sf lot at 1655-57 W. 63rd St., appraised at $30,345, will be given to Children’s Home and Aid Society of Illinois, which will use it as a parking lot. Now located at 5958 S. Marshfield Ave., Children’s Home and Aid Society of Illinois expects to break ground next spring on a $6.9-million Head Start and child care center in the 1700 block of W. 61st St.

Although the community development commission signed off on the facility three years ago, it has taken that long to assemble land and arrange financing, says Illinois Facilities Fund senior project manager Mia Barracini. That includes $4.5 million in Illinois First money, she notes.

Children’s Home and Aid Society of Illinois is building in an area undergoing significant redevelopment. “I think we need them in the 15th Ward because we have no facilities for children right now,” says Alderman Theodore Thomas, noting it is being built next to a new Chicago Public Library branch. “We’re getting more done on 63rd Street now than we’ve ever done before.”

The parking lot sale was part of the deal for the larger facility, says Michelle Nolan of the department of planning and development. The community development commission recommended the $1 land sale Tuesday.
