Carlson Opens $30M Hotel at Newark Airport

ELIZABETH, NJ-Carlson Hospitality, based in Minneapolis, has opened a 210-room Country Inns & Suites by Carlson on a site near Newark Liberty International Airport. The $30 million property also marks the brand’s official entry into the tri-state New York City hotel market.

The seven-story hostelry is located at 100 Glimcher Realty Way, directly across from Glimcher’s Jersey Gardens Mall here. Among the amenities at the newly constructed hotel is a shuttle service to both the mall and to the airport, which itself straddles the border between the adjoining cities of Newark and Elizabeth. While the terminals lie in the city of Newark, much of the runway system lies within Elizabeth.

“This flagship property is one that will set the stage for future Country Inns & Suites hotels in markets such as Newark,” according to Carlson executive vice president and brand leader Nancy Johnson. “This is an area of great growth and high visibility, and we are very committed to it.”

“This is more than a grand opening of a new hotel,” says Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage. “It is the opening of a successful international chain that is committed to this community.”

A mid-tier lodging chain, Country Inns & Suites by Carlson currently numbers more than 320 locations around the world. It’s one of several Carlson brands–the others include Regent International, Radisson Hotels & Resorts, Park Plaza Hotels and Resorts and Park Inn Hotels. Related Carlson brands include Radisson Seven Seas Cruises and Carlson Restaurants Worldwide and Provisions, a procurement company.

To help celebrate of the opening, the new hotel has joined with Carlson’s charitable partner, World Childhood Foundation, to donate $1 per reservation during the month of August to the organization, according to Johnson.
