PORT WASHINGTON, NY-Backhands and serves are now being perfected in a newly renovated indoor tennis facility at the Port Washington Tennis Academy. The two-year renovation project also included an expansion of the parking lot and clubhouse at a cost between $6-$7 million.

According to PWTA president Dick Zausner, prior to the renovation project the facility offered 13 indoor tennis courts and six outdoor ones. The project called for enclosing the outdoor courts and also removing two for the expansion of the parking lot and clubhouse. The facility now offers 17 indoor courts, a three-lane quarter-mile indoor running track elevated above the courts and circling the exterior of the new clubhouse, as well as lounges and extensive locker room facilities.

“The many unique features of our newly expanded tennis facility include state-of-the-art court lighting and underground watering systems,” he says.

The indoor tennis courts were fully operational during the renovation period and, he adds, the clubhouse work did not begin until the courts were finished so the renovations would not disrupt the tennis activity. The PWTA expects to move into the new clubhouse this week, Zausner says.

The first PWTA building was built in 1966 and the newest building is at least 27 years old, Zausner explains. The facility was designed by McNerney Basmajian Architects of Plainview, NY and was built by Racanelli Construction Co. of Melville, NY.
