LONDON-The Welsh Assembly has given the green light to proposals for a £160 million ($254.7 million) sports, retail and residential scheme at the new stadium for Cardiff City Football Club.

The Assembly has decided not to intervene in the application, which has already been approved by Cardiff Council.

The new stadium, being developed by Sam Hamman, will be funded with receipts and rents from the 400,000-sf retail and housing components. Included in the plans are a health and fitness club, a 154-bed hotel and new transport infrastructure.

The plans had been opposed by local resident groups and the Welsh rugby club but the council, and the Assembly has now agreed, that the football club needs to relocate to a larger stadium if it is progress. But without commercial development the building of a new stadium would be financially unviable.

Planning consultant RPS indicated that developers have lined up 20 retailers, including Courts; Halfords; PC World and Comet.
