MINNEAPOLIS-Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said this week he will contribute $4 million to improvements planned for the Target Center, where his professional basketball team plays in downtown Minneapolis.

The Minneapolis City Council recently approved a $14 million fund to finance upgrades to the arena over the next few years, which will include a new scoreboard from ANC/SACO based in Purchase, NY, an outside video display system and new parquet-style playing surface. Both should be installed in time for the team’s season opener.

Other improvements to the basketball arena, which is owned by the city of Minneapolis, could include new seats, renovated concourses and better acoustics for concerts.

The Target Center has faced competition for entertainment acts from downtown St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center, the three-year-old home to the Minnesota Wild, the professional hockey team.

Target Center is also the home of the Minnesota Lynx, a women’s pro team also owned by Taylor.
