AURORA, CO-The Board of Regents of the University of Colorado selected The Weitz Co. as construction manager and general contractor for the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center’s planned 10-story, 180,000-sf academic office building at the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center here.

The new facility will house the schools of medicine, nursing, dentistry and pharmacy, says Don Gendall, director of business development at Weitz. The UCHSC received 12 submittals in response to their request for proposals for construction management/general contracting services.

The selection committee chose five firms for presentations and interviews before recommending the final three construction firms to the board. Design and pre-construction planning for the new academic offices will be completed in a year.

Construction is scheduled to begin in October 2004 and will be completed in February 2006. Project architects are Anderson Mason Dale.

The 227-acre UCHSC campus and hospital is expected to become a cornerstone for the growing life sciences industry in Colorado. The redevelopment of Fitzsimons on the northwest corner of I-225 and East Colfax Avenue is the largest redevelopment project in the country devoted to medical and biotech-related businesses and organizations.

By 2010, Fitzsimons expects to have seven million sf of building space when completed. The UCHSC campus is the beginning of a $4.3 billion project. Children’s Hospital also will be moving to Fitzsimons from the Uptown neighborhood east of Downtown Denver.

Founded in 1855, Weitz is a full-service general contractor, design-builder and construction manager with 12 offices nationwide. The company ranked 25th among domestic general building contractors during 2002, according to the May issue of Engineering News-Record with $745.1 million in revenues.
