DETROIT-Twelve metro area drug stores are on the sales block after a bankruptcy filing by Youngstown, OH-based Drug Emporium, Inc.

F&M Super Drug Stores was part of Drug Emporium’s 77-store chain. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week in Youngstown.

The company said all 77 of its company-owned stores will close and be offered for sale. The stores operate under the Drug Emporium, F& M and VIX names in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Several independently owned Drug Emporium Stores in Texas and West Virginia will not be affected.

Snyder’s president Gordon Barker said in announcing the move that Drug Emporium’s performance had failed to improve despite significant capital infusions.

The metro area F&M stores were originally started by Warren, MI-based F&M Distributors. That company was operating more than 100 stores in the Midwest when it went bankrupt and out of business in 1994.
