LANSING, MI-Gov. Jennifer Granholm is looking for ways to make Michigan’s cities more hip — and to stem the tide of young adults leaving the state.

Granholm has asked the mayors of more than 250 Michigan cities to convene local “cool cities” advisory groups to look for ways to get people to live, work and shop in these areas.

The US Census Bureau showed that more than 33,000 young adults left southeast Michigan between 2000 and 2002.

“Our younger generations hold the key to our economic future,” Granholm said in a statement. “When young people leave Michigan, they take with them their talent, job skills, solid educations and economic growth potential. We’re going right to the source to find out what will make them want to stay.”

Thirty of the mayors have been asked to name one person from their local group to a statewide “cool city” advisory panel. The results of the state advisory panel will be reviewed by Granholm and announced in December.
