ANN ARBOR, MI-The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority will purchase the Ann Arbor YMCA Building for $3.5 million, unless the Ann Arbor City Council decides it wants the property. The city has until the end of the month to exercise a right of first refusal on the property.

A new YMCA is to be built in Ann Arbor, on Washington, Third and Huron streets, which is expected to open in spring 2005. The new multi-level YMCA will total about 82,000-sf.

If the sale goes through as planned, the Transportation Authority will use the old YMCA as a transit center and will offer low-income housing on the upper level of the property, an attempt to respond to the loss of housing services which had been offered by the YMCA.

AATA, which is maintained by local, state, and federal funds, will pay half of the purchase price around December 2003 and the rest will be due when AATA takes possession. It currently has $1 million in federal funds for the purchase and is expected to have another $1.78 million from the fiscal year that began Oct 1.
