BETHESDA, MD-The last wall has gone up and the doors have opened at the Whitney at Bethesda Theatre, a 253-unit luxury apartment development. Developers the Bozzuto Group and Smith Payes LLC relied on Donohoe Construction Co. to build the $75-million project. With the assistance of Weihe Design Group Architecture, Bozzuto and Smith Payes were able to preserve the historically significant 1930′s-era Bethesda Theatre design while redeveloping the property into a residential dwelling.

Located on a corner spot at 7707 Wisconsin Ave., the new high-end multifamily development boasts the best of both worlds as far as location is concerned. It sports an entry on a bustling street and a side-street presence on a residential avenue. Two-hundred-and-five of the Whitney’s living quarters, atop the theatre segment, are contained within an 11-story structure, and 39 more apartments are housed in the adjoining low-rise building. In addition, there are nine townhouses in the complex.

The property also features a fitness facility, a business center, a clubroom and a four-level subterranean parking facility capable of accommodating well over 600 vehicles. The parking garage, however, has a dual purpose, of sorts. Part of the facility is reserved for those who call the Whitney home, and the other part is now the property of Montgomery County and is designated for public parking.

“This project is a wonderful example of Montgomery County’s ongoing investment in the arts, in needed parking for Bethesda’s thriving downtown, and in promoting Bethesda as a smart growth community,” Montgomery County executive Douglas M. Duncan says. “This multi-use project is another example of the community’s deep commitment to fostering an arts renaissance while meeting varied needs in a creative and cost effective way within an urban environment where space is at a premium.”
