MINNEAPOLIS-The city recently unveiled two biotech zones: a Lifesciences Corridor, built around some hospitals, medical labs and healthcare providers, many in the struggling Phillips neighborhood, and a research park associated with the University of Minnesota.

The Minneapolis Lifesciences Corridor will be built around Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Phillips Eye Institute and the Hennepin County Medical Center. The corridor, that encompasses some 800 acres, includes more than 2,300 doctors, more than 250 researchers and more than 60 research and clinical labs. The Phillips neighborhood is one of the city’s poorest and has been plagued by crime and unemployment. The area has 12,000 health care workers and drew more than $21 million in research funds last year. Genesis Business Centers will help incubate new med-tech companies in the area.

The Chicago Avenue Bioscience Consortium, a life sciences advisory group of educators, scientists, physicians and corporate officials formed by Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, is committed to trying to build a collaborative research center in the old Sears building near Abbott Northwestern.

The effort is part of the city’s application to create a “bioscience zone,” an effort to take advantage of a new state initiative to encourage the growth of the biotech industry in Minnesota.
