ST. PAUL-Gov. Tim Pawlenty has told Vikings owner Red McCombs that if his team moves his summer training camp out of state, it would affect its chances of getting a deal for a new stadium.

Pawlenty called McCombs this week to tell him that if the NFL team moved its training camp out of the state–Sioux Falls, SD is aggressively wooing the team–it would hurt its chances of securing a stadium deal in the Minnesota legislature, according to published reports. The state is expected to announce next month a Vikings stadium proposal for the legislative session, which begins in January.

The Vikings, who have spent the three-week summer NFL training camp for the last 39 years on the campus of Minnesota State University in Mankato, are shopping a potential four-year deal. The Vikings, who are based in Eden Prairie, opened bidding for training camp after their contract with Mankato expired after this year’s camp. McCombs is looking for more revenue streams to offset the cost of camp, about $500,000—-and to produce revenues for the team as well.

Sioux Falls is considered a finalist along with Mankato, Duluth, MN, and Fargo, ND. The Vikings are expected to make their decision within a month.
