JACKSON, MI-The vacant former Consumers Energy headquarters at 212 W. Michigan Ave. here will be purchased by the city. The 280,000-sf building was recently vacated when the power company built a new headquarters on a former brownfield location in the city.

The Jackson City Council has approved a $300,000 purchase agreement, which includes several surrounding parking lots.

Consumers will write off part of the sale as a charitable donation. The sale will close at the end of the year, assuming a variety of environmental and other inspections are approved.

In the short run, the city will consider moving its offices to the Consumers building next year while City Hall is renovated. Until now, the former Hayes Hotel, bought from Consumers for $1.5 million, was considered the most likely spot for a temporary City Hall.

Over the long term, portions of the Consumers building could be used for public purposes, including city storage and offices. Eventually, the city would seek to redevelop the property.
