LONDON-The London Development Agency has reworked its plans for the 2012 Olympic bid. All of the key facilities for the games will now be accommodated in a 500-acre campus around the international rail station at Stratford in east London. And the games site will be surrounded by 1,500 acres of parkland stretching from Hackney marshes to the Thames.

“We are aiming to create a compact Games for the modern Olympic movement,” said Keith Mills, CEO of London 2012. “The layout of venues has been designed to meet the requirements of the athletes during the Games as well as the long-term needs of London communities post Games.”

The EDAW-led masterplanning team has to give a preliminary submission to the International Olympic Committee by 15 January 2004. The main venues will be an 80,000 seat Olympic stadium at Marshgate Lane and an aquatic centre including a 50m Olympic pool at Carpenters Road. Construction of an aquatic centre is scheduled to go ahead regardless of the outcome of the bid.

In addition the velodrome will be at the existing Eastway Sports Centre and a multi-sport complex for indoor sports such as handball, volleyball and basketball will be built on the site of the former Hackney Greyhound Stadium at Hackney Wick.

The Olympic Village to house athletes is a key part of any Olympic bid. The LDA has reached agreement with Chelsfield, developer of the 5 million-sf Stratford City complex, to develop a 17,000-bed Olympic Village on part of its site. This would be converted to about 4,000 new homes after the games.
