LONDON-Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has cleared the way for Europe’s tallest office building to be built above London Bridge station on the south bank of the Thames. At more than 1,000 ft Renzo Piano’s controversial design—dubbed the ‘Shard of Glass’—will become a new landmark on the London skyline.

The 66-floor tower will total 1.4 million sf including 600,000 sf of office space on 29 lower floors, a hotel, residential, retail and restaurant space and a fitness club. Joint developers Sellar Property Group, CLS Holdings and Simon Halabi say construction work on the tower will begin in 2005, with completion scheduled for 2009.

As yet no pre-lettings are in place, buy accountant PriceWaterhouse Coopers currently occupies an office block on the site and has been in talks with the developer about returning to the site once construction is complete.
