PHOENIX-An 18-year Weitz Co. employee has moved up the ranks from his start as an assistant project manager to president of the Southwest region.

Mike Bontrager, who started with the Des Moines-based firm as an assistant project manager in 1983, was named to the regional post by Weitz’s COO Jim Simmons. Bontrager replaces Larry Mohr, who stepped down as president in September, but has remained on as senior vice president. As president, Bontrager will oversee more than 145 employees in the Southwest. He is responsible for long-range planning, business acquisition, safety evaluation, project planning, financial planning and subcontractor relations.

Prior to being named president, Bontrager served as vice president and construction manager in Weitz’s Southwestern region. Through the years, he’s also worked as project engineer, project manager, superintendent and construction manager. He did a three-year stint as vice president of operations for another local contractor. Bontrager’s father, Bill, was a 30-year employee of Weitz, working his way up to vice president.
