BOSTON-The city’s zoning commission delayed its vote on Kensington Investment’s plan to build a 30-story apartment building in Chinatown on Washington Street. The 346-unit project, called Residences at Kensington Place, had faced stiff opposition from local groups but received approval from the Boston Redevelopment Authority in September.

The developer is seeking to create a planned development area, a zoning designation that allows buildings to exceed the allowable height. A city official tells GlobeSt.com that the zoning commission tabled the decision and has not set a date on when it will reconsider the issue. “It’s a question as to what will happen next,” says the city official.

But Diane Pichotta, a spokesperson for the developer, tells GlobeSt.com that there are no plans to reconsider the project. “The project is what it is,” she says. The building consists of 413,000 sf of residential space as well as 7,378 sf of ground floor retail and restaurant space and about 2,000 sf of office space. The total project cost is $115 million. Pichotta insists that the zoning commission tabled their decision because they needed more information.
