FERGUS FALLS, MN-The four-story Beall & McGowan grocery warehouse on Lincoln Avenue in the Downtown of this western Minnesota town is architecturally significant in addition to being the town’s tallest building.

But the 85-year-old building has been heavily damaged by fire and has become a potential hazard, and soon may be torn down. In fact, less than a year ago part of the brick cornice fell off and crashed onto the roof of a beauty salon and killed a customer.

Although the building has been temporarily shored up, a permanent fix would cost $175,000 or more, according to its owner, Kurt Kiefer, who bought the 20,000-sf building three years ago. Kiefer recently told the Star Tribune newspaper in Minneapolis that he hopes to sell the building, but is prepared to tear it down in several months if there is no interest.Claude Turner, an engineer who also designed the Lift Bridge in Duluth and International Market Square in Minneapolis, designed the building.
