GREAT LAKES, IL-While another military installation has been transformed into North Shore condominiums, Great Lakes Naval Station remains as the US Navy’s lone “boot camp,” visited by 42,000 recruits a year in addition to the 26,000 who live here year-round. The Defense Department’s latest improvement to its property along Lake Michigan is an $82-million warship simulator, which is being built by Chicago-based McHugh Construction Co.

The construction company, whose current projects include first work on the first residential tower in Lakeshore East, a high school in the Little Village neighborhood and rebuilding Illinois Tollway oases, is building a 500-foot long reduced scale replica of a ship within a 171,000-sf building. Work is expected to begin in July, with completion scheduled for February 2007.

McHugh Construction Co. is no stranger to military work, including projects here. It has built the Freedom Hall physical training facility as well as living quarters.
