DENVER-Colorado casinos rebounded in May, after a sluggish April. Gaming establishments statewide reported $63.6 million in adjusted gross proceeds in May, an increase of 10.9% from the $57.3 million in April.

It was a more modest 2.4% increase from the $62.1 million in May 2003. Adjusted gross proceeds is the amount wagered by bettors less payouts from casinos.

Black Hawk’s 22 casinos generated $46.7 million in adjusted gross proceeds in May, up from $42.2 million in April and $45.2 million in May 2003. Cripple Creek’s 18 casinos produced $13.1 million in adjusted gross proceeds in May, compared with $11 million in April and $12.6 million a year earlier. Central City’s five casinos produced $3.7 million in adjusted gross proceeds in May, the only low-stakes gaming town to show a drop from previous periods. Adjusted gross proceeds dropped $4.0 million from April and $4.2 million from May 2003.

In May, Black Hawk casinos accounted for 73.4% of the statewide market, followed by Cripple Creek with 20.7% and Central City with 5.9%. Casinos statewide paid $10.9 million in gaming proceeds in May, up from $9.8 million in April.

In a separate matter, the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission entered into a stipulation and agreement with Uncle Sam’s Casino in Cripple Creek. The agreement resulted in a $50,000 fine against the casino.

Last November, Uncle Sam’s Casino entered into an assurance of voluntary compliance with the Colorado Division of Gaming, after a division audit determined the casino failed to adequately prepare and review statistical reports. A follow-up review by the division found the casino failed to improve its statistical reporting procedure. That is a violation of the assurance of voluntary compliance agreement, which prompted the stipulation and agreement.
