07/07/04: Now that John Kerry has picked his running mate for the November showdown, perhaps we can have a few days of rest. Of course this is wishful thinking, and we’ll be inundated with polls; opinions; pundits; and, of course, commercials “approved by the candidate” ad nauseam. (Maybe that’s where the term “ad” came from.) This may be a good time to think about your own transition and choice of a successor. It’s not pleasant or pretty to think about, however, it’s necessary if you want to ensure the long-term health of your company. Choosing the right successor depends on many factors that include more than just functional capabilities. It also includes the ability to manage the company you’ve built and the talent to work with the people within that environment. And now, on with the show.

PRUDENTIAL MORTGAGE CAPITAL (NEWARK, NJ) Paige Warren has been appointed to lead the company’s affordable housing group, in which she will oversee and expand its strategies in this area. Warren, a principal, has been at the firm since 2003.

MARCUS & MILLICHAP (HOUSTON) Michael E. Hoffman has been named vice president. Hoffman was most recently regional manager for the firm’s Houston office, which he joined in 2001. Prior to that, he joined Marcus & Millichap’s Newport Beach , CA , office in 1992.

COLLIERS SEELEY INTERNATIONAL (ORANGE, CA) The firm has elected Stuart Gabriel and Keith Renken to its board of directors. Gabriel is the director and Lusk Chair in real estate at the University of Southern California . Renken is former senior partner and chairman at Deloitte & Touche.

STAUBACH CO. (FORT WORTH, TX) David Walters has joined the company’s Southwest division as vice president. Walters will focus on industrial and office tenant representation.

COMMERCIAL TEXAS (AUSTIN, TX) New to the firm is Ted Doucet , who comes on board as tenant representative. Doucet will work with high-tech companies based in or relocating to the Austin area. He was previously regional sales manager at Forgent Networks.

TAYLOR & MATHIS (DALLAS) Mark Boynton has joined the firm as broker, joining a team responsible for leasing office buildings in downtown Dallas . Boynton was most recently at Cushman & Wakefield.

JOHNSON CAPITAL (SAN DIEGO) Brian Harvey has joined the firm as director. He will originate and place capital for office, industrial, retail and multifamily properties. Harvey was most recently vice president at Bank of the West.
