NEW YORK CITY-It’s been a busy month for 850 Third Ave. First, the Discovery Channel signs on to be an anchor tenant with naming rights and now the New York City-Fire and Police, which has maintained a home base for a station at the site for more than 40 years, signs on for another 20 years.

The City Fire and Police renewed for 41,074 sf of space at the 563,000-sf building, which is owned by Chicago-based Equity Office Properties Trust. The building, which features a so-called “wedding-cake” design, was constructed in 1962. Basic floor plates in the base measure 38,000 sf, while tower floor plates are approximately 12,000 sf. According to Equity Office, the police/fire station occupied space at the site before the building was constructed. The city plans to renovate the space once the Republican National Convention is over. Space is the site is advertised from $38 to $46 per sf.

The site itself was also newly renovated. The lobby features statuary marble and terrazzo-tiled floor. Amenities include high-speed Internet access, on-site full–service banking, various retail services and a new HVAC system. The city was self-represented and Brett Greenberg, managing-director for Equity Office, represented the ownership.

The 21-story site in Midtown East between 51st and 52nd streets, will soon be renamed “the Discovery Building.” Earlier this month, Discovery Communications closed on a 16-year deal for 150,940 sf on four floors. As part of the agreement, the entertainment company received naming rights.
