ATLANTA-It’s the same old-same old for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the country’s largest retailer which continues to run into store-development opposition by local resident groups at every turn. This time, the locales are Forsyth County and northern Henry County, both part of metro Atlanta’s immediate 10-county market.

In Forsyth County, the planning commission has delayed taking a vote on a 203,000-sf supercenter proposed on a 52.6-acre triangular-shaped tract at Bagley and Mathis Airport roads and GA 141 or Peachtree Parkway. The estimated $15-million store would be built on land that received commercial zoning in 1988. That means Wal-Mart doesn’t have to reapply for a new rezoning, retail brokers following the retailers’ many scuffles with resident groups in metro area over the past five years, tell GlobeSt.com.

But residents in the nearby subdivisions of Laurel Springs, Bridle Ridge and Aberdeen tell county officials they fear increased traffic from the supercenter will alter their communities’ established quality of life.

In Henry County, Wal-Mart plans to build a comparable 200,000-sf, $15-million supercenter at the north end of the county. After hearing protests from residents claiming the project would breed crime, noise, pollution and increase traffic, the citizen planning commission recommended the county commission deny the project. The county commission is scheduled to review the venture in October.
