ATLANTA-Planning for the completion of an area-wide commuter rail service scheduled to break ground in 2006, Jonesboro-based developers Gamal and Galil Tawfik are asking the Henry County Municipal Planning Commission for approval to build 82 townhomes and two commercial pads at an estimated hard construction cost of $10 million in suburban Lovejoy.

The Tawfiks’ project, Lovejoy Meadows, would be built on 24 acres on Lovejoy Road, next to the Clayton County line, according to preliminary development plans filed with the county. The developers want the land rezoned to allow high-density construction. The Tawfiks own GT Communities, a well-known Southside builder.

Lovejoy, a fast-growing Southside city, is expected to be the southernmost stop for the commuter rail service. Other developers, such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc., already are recognizing the strategic location of Lovejoy and have started new retail and residential construction in the area, brokers familiar with the submarket tell GlobeSt.com.
