THOUSAND OAKS, CA-Continuing Life Communities of Carlsbad has unveiled plans for a 367-unit seniors housing complex called University Village on a site at the northwest corner of Campus Drive and Olsen Road just north of California Lutheran University. The project, to be designed by the architectural firm of Van Tilburg Banvard & Soderbergh of Santa Monica, has been on the boards for some time and also reflects what many observers see as a recovering market for seniors housing. The University Village development, planned for a 65-acre site, will target residents aged 62 and older and will feature a traditional Spanish colonial theme in the Santa Barbara style to fit in with Ventura County’s architectural heritage. It will incorporate a clubhouse building at the center of the complex that will be designed as a village center, along with open space bordering and running through the community. The units will include single-story, free-standing villas featuring two and three bedrooms with fully equipped kitchens and attached garages, as well as apartments of one, two and three bedrooms overlooking a central courtyard adjacent to the clubhouse.Another group of apartments, called Garden Terrace homes, will feature two and three bedrooms with large, covered balconies. Richard D. Aschenbrenner, CEO of Continuing Life Communities, says construction is scheduled to start around the middle of 2005. Nearly 150 of the units at University Village have already been reserved, Aschenbrenner notes. He points out that the development will be a continuing care retirement community will also offer a large package of services, activities and amenities such as fine dining and outdoor patio dining. The services will include assisted living and skilled nursing, if ever needed, in a continuing care program licensed by the state’s Department of Social Services. Continuing Life Communities also developed La Costa Glen in Carlsbad and Morningside in Fullerton.
